Key steps in providing contraceptive services are outlined in Exhibit 8.

Exhibit 8. Key Steps in Providing Contraceptive Services

Step 1. Establish and maintain rapport with the patient.

Step 2. Personalize contraceptive discussions by asking about individuals’ contraceptive preferences, based on their desires, needs, and prior experiences.

Step 3. Collaboratively determine which contraception (if any) aligns with the patient's preferences.

Step 4. Conduct a physical assessment related to contraceptive use, when indicated.

Step 5. Provide or refer for the contraceptive method, along with instructions about correct and consistent use; help the patient develop a plan for using the selected method and for follow-up; and confirm understanding.
